General Paediatrics

Dr Leana van Dyk provides expert general paediatric services. These general paediatric services range from basic advice and care to the investigation, diagnosis, treatment and management of chronic illnesses, and injuries. More specifically, these services also include:

  • In-patient (hospitalisation) and out-patient care
  • Newborn attendance - the assessment of your newborn at delivery, whether it’s a natural birth or caesarean. Doctor van Dyk performs comprehensive checks of your baby’s health, including an extensive physical exam- which includes the Apgar scoring and the measurement of birth parameters such as weight, length and head circumference, as well as checking all of your baby’s vital signs such as temperature, heart rate, breathing rate and skin. If the baby is born prematurely, i.e., before 37 weeks, the baby will remain at the hospital and Dr van Dyk will care for and treat them in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
  • Growth and developmental screening - by monitoring and tracking growth parameters, and performing general health checks, Dr van Dyk can detect growth problems early on, allowing parents the opportunity to address any issues as soon as possible and ensuring the best outcome for the child. The first routine weight check occurs 1 week after mom and baby are discharged from the hospital. After that, at six weeks, five months, nine months (optional), 12 months, 18 months and possibly yearly thereafter. Dr van Dyk will continuously offer parental education.
  • Addressing common concerns in infancy such as poor weight gain and failure to thrive (FTT). The reasons for which may include problems with feeding, bowel movements, sleep patterns and skin problems. These concerns are addressed at every visit, and the best advice and treatment is administered. Doctor van Dyk will discuss all your questions and queries about the feeding and care of your newborn.
  • Dermatological issues - such as eczema, skin infections, and new-born skin conditions including nappy rash, cradle cap, acne or rashes
  • Respiratory conditions and infections including asthma, allergic rhinitis, croup, tonsillitis, pneumonia and bronchitis
  • Emergency care - Doctor Van Dyk offers emergency consults with patients suffering from a high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, acute pain, headache, abdominal pain, seizures, difficulty breathing, severe restlessness or even traumatic injury.
  • Doctor van Dyk will discuss all your questions and queries relating to immunization advice, diet, sleep, behaviour, and environmental factors that affect child development.
  • The early detection of cardiovascular, gastroenterological, musculoskeletal, nephrological or neurological issues and referring to other specialists, if necessary in order to deliver optimal care.
